When a mate of mine recommended a band from back home in Ireland who were all about fifteen years old, I thought he was joking. But when I checked out the video for The Strypes’ ‘You Can’t Judge A Book By The Cover’ I was well surprised, very very pleasantly surprised. The Strypes are from Cavan in Ireland, very close to my hometown of Longford. When I was fifteen my friends and I were playing Radiohead songs to old men in tiny country pubs. The idea of music videos, performing in London, or signing to Mercury Records were unimaginable. Not for these guys it seems as it’s all happened for them. They’ve also been named as the No.1 band to watch out for by NME and they have fans in the likes of Jeff Beck, Paul Weller and Elton John. Fuckin’ hell. Is it lame to say I’m almost proud of these kids?!
The Strypes play tonight in London at the Old Blue Last, and return to London again on 12 February at the Social and 14 March at the Lexington. I’m going to the Social gig, see ya there.
