10 Years Ago: ‘Boy In Da Corner’

Hard to believe that it’s been ten years since Dizzee Rascal’s album Boy in Da Corner was released. In the summer of 2003, this debut was released to universal acclaim and went on to pick up the Mercury Prize that year; putting UK hip hop on the map. A fresh, innovative fusion of hip hop and techno at the time; some of the lyrics admittedly seem a little dated now and lyrics on Fix Up, Look Sharp such as “Being a celebrity don’t mean shit to me. Fuck the glitz and glamour” raise an eyebrow when you think of Dizzee’s more mainstream albums. Not to mention, playing at the Danny Boyle-directed opening ceremony for the Olympics – probably the biggest show in the world! But, put a pin in all that, and enjoy it for what it was at the time. Still love this tune…
