May the Fourth Be With You

Happy Star Wars Day everyone, may the fourth be with you. It’s a day that people are becoming more and more aware of, especially with all the buzz building for next year’s Star Wars Episode VII. The cast were announced last week with the past gang of Mark Hamill,  Harrison Ford, Carrie Fisher, Anthony Daniels, Peter Mayhew and (possibly) Kenny Baker being joined by a new line-up. The new cast includes British actor John Boyega from Attack the Block as well as Adam Driver and Oscar Isaac – both from the recent Coen Brothers’ Inside Llewyn Davis. Max Von Sydow, who is not in the released photo of the table read (below), will also star – his career began with such Ingmar Bergman classics as The Seventh Seal and was more recently seen in films like Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close and Spielberg’s Minority Report. Andy Serkis, Irishman Domhnall Gleeson and unknown actress Daisy Ridley complete the line-up.

Andy Serkis is generally known as the go-to guy for motion capture in the industry so will most likely play some kind of alien. It’s unsure what role Gleeson (Brendan Gleeson’s son) will be playing but there is much speculation that Daisy Ridley could be the daughter of Ford’s Han Solo and Fisher’s Princess Leia. I can’t tell you how excited I am about these upcoming Star Wars movies, with an Episode VIII and IX also planned. Hopefully, in the hands of JJ Abrams, he can heal some the pain that the reviled prequel trilogy caused the die-hard fans. It also raises some interesting questions, will the new trilogy make any reference to the prequels or will it just try its best to avoid that mess? Will there be any in-jokes to show that this new trilogy purely follows the original trilogy and not the Special Edition versions? I personally would love just one or two moments like this, for example if Han were to advise one of the younger generation something like “Always shoot first, kid. I always did” – a reference to the much-hated Special Edition alteration of A New Hope where Han no longer shoots Greedo first in the Mos Eisley cantina. Yes, I am a geek!
