Hackney Picturehouse in London is holding the Doc ‘n’ Roll Festival from 26-28th September, in what promises to be a feast of international music documentaries. Filmmaker Julien Temple directed one that is of particularly interest to a Clash fan such as myself, namely Joe Strummer: The Future is Unwritten. Check out the trailer here –
Directed by Danny Garcia, who directed The Rise and Fall of The Clash coincidentally, there will also be a showing of this documentary about Johnny Thunders – previous member of the New York Dolls, and later The Heartbreakers.
And one that highlights a subject matter completely unknown to me, and completely intriguing, is this documentary about Death. No, not in an Ingmar Bergman way; Death were a three-piece group from 1970s Detroit – who played straight up rock ‘n’ roll! Predating the likes of the Ramones, New York Dolls and the Sex Pistols; it’s very interesting to uncover that late sixties/early seventies was possibly the real birthplace of punk. Especially you take the Stooges into account too.
