Anacondas & Booties – Is this Feminism?

Billboard had an interesting piece yesterday on the ‘good news’ that women are so prominent in the music scene at the moment and that the top five of the US Billboard is all-female. Why do I put ‘good news’ in inverted commas? Because I’m a sexist, misogynistic pig? No, that’s a separate matter, it’s because I think it is pure, unadulterated laziness to assume this is good news from a feminist point of view – particularly when these leading women of music include the likes of Nicki Minaj, Rihanna, Iggy Azalea, Jennifer Lopez (who let her back in?) and Miley feckin’ Cyrus.

Nicki Minaj’s latest hit, and yes it was a hit I’m sorry to say, was a very subtle message about how a man doesn’t like to fuck girls unless they have gigantic asses. Hmmm perhaps it’s just a tongue-in-cheek metaphor and there’s something deeper to the message, let’s check out the video. No, she’s simply surrounded by gigantic asses and slapping them. Emmeline Pankhurst would be so proud. I recently had someone try to argue that Nicki Minaj was admittedly an “idiot” but that Rhianna was “the real deal”. It’s slightly worrying that people would differentiate between these kinds of popstars, it’s simply splitting hairs in my opinion. Should I continue to argue or allow some of Rhianna’s recent escapades to speak for themselves –

The real deal, yeah. Evan Lamberg from UMPG even had the nerve to say that the recent trend “reflects today’s culture of women being more outwardly confident and more self-empowering.” Other notable entrants in the music parade of empowerment include Iggy Azalea and Jennifer Lopez rubbing their asses together for ‘Booty’ and Miley Cyrus riding a wrecking ball naked in what was otherwise a quite sweet pop song. But no, make sure to dowse it in sex and “empowerment”.

My bottom line here is not that I want to attack these individual women necessarily; but whatever machine they are a part of has real, concrete and negative repercussions in my opinion. There must be eight year old girls out there who are soaking up this information that adult females are giving them. This message is simply – you will be a sex object, you must have a big ass, you must wear very few clothes, you can succeed but only when you are willing to sacrifice your dignity. Oh, and of course, when you sacrifice your dignity remember to call it “empowerment” – it makes everyone relax.
