Very sad news that comes from Paris this week, and a terrible way to start a new year. There really is a lot of trouble in the world at the moment. It got me thinking about how freedom of speech, freedom of expression and art have been at the heart of two of the world’s biggest issues of late – the Sony Pictures cyberhack and now the Paris shootings at Charlie Hebdo.
I’m in no way trying to belittle the events, quite the opposite. Freedom of expression has always been a key reason for me ever wanting to work in the arts, whether that be playing music in the past or helping promote musicians now. Did Charlie Hebdo go too far? Should we amend our freedoms so as to not offend people? If being able to offend people just a part of our freedoms? I don’t have the answers and am asking myself these same questions. Nevertheless, our deepest condolences to those affected by the tragedy in Paris, and also our deepest respect.
